Mission Statement

The criminal justice system is built on the principles of proportional punishment and the idea that individuals should not be subjected to indefinite penalties. Once a person has served their sentence, which is determined by the legal system as appropriate for their crime, they have paid their debt to society. Denying them release contradicts the core legal principle of finite punishment. The justice system is designed to punish, rehabilitate, and eventually reintegrate offenders, and sex offenders should not be an exception to this rule. Indefinitely detaining sex offenders after they have completed their sentences is a violation of these principles and undermines the integrity of the justice system. Ethically, society has a responsibility to support individuals in their efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate. This reflects a belief in the potential for human change and the importance of offering second chances. .

The Prison Release Project's mission is to have ex-offenders released from prison who are being held past their date of release.
